MARFA ADOBES

1997-2024

Marfa TX.

Featuring: Tokerud / Mudd house / Beal house

The town of Marfa grew out of the intersection of an ancient North-South route and the East-West trade route of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Its early history dates to the frontier, which included ranching and army forts. Later an airfield was added, and the town became a POW camp for German soldiers. The early buildings were all adobe, and adobe construction continued to be the prominent form of building into the 1930s. The architecture of Marfa has remained relatively intact and reflects a relationship with the landscape, where available materials and a history of how to use them endured. Very little building occurred between 1940 and 2010. Today, Marfa is a small town with a population of around 2,000.

SILLA has been deeply involved in the restoration and preservation of adobe buildings in Marfa and the surrounding area. Our adobe yard and workshops are in Marfa, which is also our home.
