TEXAS ARCHITECTURE

July/August 2016

“Local skills and materal were critical in the realiziaton of this sapce. Joey Benton, of Silla, a design and fabrication studio in Marfa, designed and fabricated the wood check-in counter and the steel paneled back wall that hides a stair to the basment and an office while local fabricator Mack White crafted interior doors designed by Benton,”

“Bring Marfa’s artfully rustic vibe to you with the Silla Bucket Chair. The thick vegetable-tanned leather is sewn by the same machines texans use to make saddles, then slung across a steel frame in your choice of colors by craftsman Joey Benton. This is the rare peice of furnture that satisfies both your inner art critic and your inner cowboy.”

(RANCH 2810) “To reach the house, you drive through the barren country southwest of Marfa, enter through a metal gate and up a gravel pass for two miles...The horizontal lines of steel, concrete and metal structure seem to have sprung from the land; views of the desert stretch for miles in every direction.”

“ Sarah Crowner’s Platform (Blue Green Terracotta for JC) is a site-specific installation for the museum’s special exhibition building. It consists of two thousand square feet of handmade tiles, glazed turquoise blue, on a massive wooden platform. The artist intends for visitors to step up onto the piece, like a stage, and become immersed in saturated color, glowing light, and interactive shapes. ”

“ The crew made 1,450 new bricks to patch up the house. Adobe construction involves making walls from adobe bricks and mortar, and plastering the walls in adobe finish. On top of the walls, log beams known as vigas—typically cottonwood in the Big Bend area—support the roof. Builders then line latillas—skinny sticks like willow, ocotillo, or cane—across the vigas. “

“ The handsome, but not overdone, one-story structure was completed two years ago and represents a collaboration between Crowley and Benton, a furniture-maker with the Marfa company Silla. Benton contributed steel framing and woodwork in the kitchen, bedroom, and dressing room as well as signature furnishings, including an imposing console that holds its own below a Donald Judd diptych in the open-plan dining room. “

“ The new hotel in town is an architectural triumph by Houston-based Carlos Jiménez, who drew inspiration from the original 1880s hotel that occupied the site. Local design studio Silla—headed up by Joey Benton, who moved to Marfa when Judd died—created custom-made pieces like the steel-and-mahogany reception desk, steel doors, hanging lights, and headboards in the suites. ”

“ To pair with our drawing exercises, the studio also worked with local craftsman Joey Benton of Silla Marfa to complete a small mock-up of an adobe wall. Within two hours, the students went from knowing zero information about adobe to perfecting their mortar application and creating an efficient assembly line. “

“ When furniture designer and maker Joey Benton of Marfa, Texas had a surplus of beautiful leather left over from a job he made lemonade by making sandals inspired by footwear of the past where there were no left and right. Here he explains the idea behind the sandals design and speaks about the wild possibilities and limitations that are part of living in the remote west texas desert town of Marfa, Texas. “
